【原文】

子曰：「弟子（1），入則孝，出則弟，謹而信，汎愛眾（2），而親仁。行有餘力，則以學文（3）。」

【英文】

The Master said, “A young man should be a good son at home and an obedient young man abroad, sparing of speech but trustworthy in what he says, and should love the multitude at large but cultivate the friendship of his fellow men. If, after all these activities, he has any energy to spare, let him use it to making himself cultivated.”

【注釋】

（1）指後生晚輩

（2）汎愛眾，汎，廣博普遍。眾，眾人。

（3）文，古之遺文。指《詩》《書》六藝之文。

 【翻譯】

孔子說：「同學們在父母面前要孝順父母，与兄弟相處要尊敬兄長；說話要謹慎而講信用；博愛大眾而特別親近那些有仁德的人。做到了這些之后，才談得上學習文化知識。」

【主旨】為事之道，為人之道。
