【原文】

衛靈公問陳（1）於孔子。孔子對曰：「俎豆（2）之事，則嘗聞之矣；軍旅（3）之事，未之學也。」明日遂行。在陳絕糧。從者病，莫能興（4）。子路慍見曰：「君子亦有窮乎？」子曰：「君子固窮（5）；小人斯濫（6）矣。」

【英文】

Duke Ling of Wei asked Confucius about military formations. Confucius answered, “I have, indeed, heard something about the use of sacrificial vessels, but I have never studied the matter of commanding troops.” The next day he departed.

In Chen when provisions ran out the followers had become so weak that none of them could get to their feet. Zi-lu, with resentment written all over his face, said, “Are there times when even gentlemen are brought to such extreme straits?” The Master said, “It comes as no surprise to the gentleman to find himself in extreme straits. The small man finding himself in extreme straits would throw over all restraint.”

【注釋】

（1）陳，同「陣」。謂軍隊行伍之列。

（2）俎豆，盛祭品之禮器。

（3）軍旅，猶言軍隊，此指戰伐。

（4）興，起也。

（5）固窮，言君子固然亦有窮困之時。

（6）濫，氾濫，言行為放肆如水氾濫。

【翻譯】

衛靈公問孔子關於軍隊布陣作戰的方法。孔子回答道：「關於禮節的事，我曾經聽過；關於軍隊戰伐的事，我卻沒學過。」第二天，孔子便離開衛國。走到陳國時，斷絕了糧食，跟隨的弟子們都餓病了，爬不起床來。子路心裡不快，來見孔子說：「君子也有這樣的窮困的時候嗎？」孔子說：「君子固然也有窮困的時候，但小人窮困時，便不守本分亂來了。」

【主旨】孔子去衛適陳，困於陳之事。
