【原文】

 

子曰:「我未見好仁者,惡不仁者。好仁者,無以尚之(1);惡不仁者,其為仁矣,不使不仁者加乎其身(2)。有能一日用其力於仁矣乎(3)?我未見力不足者。蓋有之矣,我未之見也。」

【英文】

The Master said, “I have never met a man who finds benevolence attractive or a man who finds unbenevolence repulsive. A man who finds benevolence attractive cannot be surpassed. A man who finds unbenevolence repulsive can, perhaps, be counted as benevolent, for he would not allow what is not benevolent to be inflicted on his person. Is there a man who, for the space of a single day, is able to devote all strength to benevo1erce? I have not come across such a man whose strength proves insufficient for the task. There must be such cases of insufficient strength, only I have not come across them.

 

【注釋】

(1)無以尚之,言其心好仁,故天下之物,無以加之。尚,加也。

(2)不使不仁者加乎其身,言必能絕去不仁之事,而不使少有及於其身。

(3)有能一日用其力於仁矣乎,言或有人果能一旦奮然用力於仁乎?

 

【翻譯】

孔子說:「我沒有見過真正愛好仁道的人,和真正厭惡不仁道的人。真正愛好仁道的人,他認為世界上沒有比仁道更高尚的事了;真正厭惡不仁道的人,他也可以算是仁者了,因為他不希望不仁的事加到他身上來。這世界上有能夠一整天,盡其心力在仁道上的嗎?我沒見過力量不夠的啊!或許真有這種人吧!只是我真的沒見過呢!」

【主旨】論知仁,從對人之愛惡說仁。
