【原文】

子張問善人（1）之道。子曰：「不踐跡，亦不入於室（2）。」

【英文】

Zi-zhang asked about the way of the good man. The Master said,“Such a man does not follow in other people`s footsteps; nor does he gain entrance into the inner room either.”

【注釋】

（1）善人，質美而未學者。

（2）不踐跡亦不入於室，言善人雖不必踐舊跡而自不為惡，然亦不能入聖人之奧室。踐跡，迫循舊跡。

【翻譯】

子張問善人的行為。孔子說：「質美的人，不迫循前賢舊跡去做，但也不會進入聖人的境域。

【主旨】善人不為惡，然亦不能入聖人之室。
