【原文】

季康子問政於孔子曰：「如殺無道，以就（1）有道，何如？」孔子對曰：「子為政，焉（2）用殺？子欲善，而民善矣！君子（3）之德風；小人（4）之德草；草上之風必偃（5）。」

【英文】

Ji Kang Zi asked Confucius about government, saying, “What would you think if, in order to move closer to those who possess the Way, I were to kill those who do not follow the Way?”

Confucius answered, “In administering your government, what need is there for you to kill? Just desire the good yourself and the common people will be good. By nature, the gentleman is like wind and the common people like grass. Let the wind sweep over the grass and it is sure to bend.”

【注釋】

（1）就，成也。

（2）焉，何也。疑問副詞。

（3）君子，指在位者。

（4）小人，指庶民、百姓。

（5）偃，仆也。

【翻譯】

季康子向孔子問為政之道說：「如果殺掉無道的壞人，成就有道得善人，怎麼樣呢？」孔子回答說：「您是一個主政的人，何必要用殺戮的辦法呢？您自己想為善，老百姓也就會跟著向善了。在位者的德行好比是風，老百姓的德行好比是草，風加在草上，草必會隨風仆倒的啊。」

【主旨】為政不需殺戮，但在上自正行仁，則人民自然受仁德感化，歸向於善。
