【原文】

子張曰：「《書》云：『高宗諒陰三年不言（1）』何謂也？」子曰：「何必高宗？古之人皆然。君薨（2），百官總己（3）以聽於冢宰（4），三年。」

【英文】

Zi-zhang said, “The Book of History says, Gao Zong confined himself to his mourning hut and for three years remained silent. What does this mean?”

The Master said, “There is no need to go to Gao Zong for an example. This was always so amongst men of antiquity. When the ruler died, all the officials joined together and placed themselves under the prime minister and, for three years, accepted his command.”

【注釋】

（1）高宗諒陰三年不言，見《尚書．無逸》篇，然文句稍有出入。言武丁居喪，三年不施政令。高宗，商王武丁。諒陰，天子居喪所居之房屋，又名凶盧。

（2）薨，死亡。

（3）總己，總攝己職。

（4）冢宰，太宰。

【翻譯】

子張說：「《尚書》上說：『商代的高宗居喪，住在凶盧，三年不談論國政。』這是什麼意思？」孔子說：「不僅僅高宗，古代的人都是這樣。國君死了，繼承的君王不過問政事，朝廷百官總攝自己的職務聽從太宰的命令，總共三年之久。」

【主旨】天子諸侯居喪之禮。
