【原文】

子貢問「為仁」。子曰：「工欲善其事，必先利其器（1）。居是邦也，事其大夫之賢者，友（2）其士之仁者。」

【英文】

Zi-gong asked about the practice of benevolence. The Master said, “A craftsman who wishes to practise his craft well must first sharpen his tools. You should, therefore, seek the patronage of the most distinguished Counsellors and make friends with the most benevolent Gentlemen in the state where you happen to be residing.”

【注釋】

（1）工欲善其事必先利其器，言公無利器，不能善其業；人無積德，不能盡其仁。利其器，使他的工具銳利。

（2）友，交友，動詞。

【翻譯】

子貢問怎樣修養仁德。孔子說：「工匠想要做好他的工作，必須先使他的工具銳利。居住在一個國家，必先侍奉這國中的賢大夫，結交這個國家中有仁德的士人。」

【主旨】明為仁之方。
