【原文】

子之（1）武城（2），聞弦歌之聲（3），夫子莞爾（4）而笑曰：「割雞焉用牛刀（5）？」子游對曰：「昔者，偃（6）也聞諸（7）夫子曰：『君子學道則愛人；小人（8）學道則易使（9）也。』」子曰：「二三子！偃之言是也；前言戲之耳！」

【英文】

The Master went to Wu Cheng. There he heard the sound of stringed instruments and singing. The Master broke into a smile and said, “Surely you don’t need to use an ox-knife to kill a chicken.”

Zi-you answered, “Some time ago I heard it from you, Master, that the gentleman instructed in the Way loves his fellow men and that the common people instructed in the Way is easy to command.”

The Master said, “My friends, what Yan says is right. My remark a moment ago was only made in jest.”

【注釋】

（1）之，前往。

（2）武城，魯邑。時子游為武城宰。

（3）弦歌之聲，言以禮樂為教，故邑人皆弦歌。

（4）莞爾，小笑貌。

（5）割雞焉用牛刀，言殺雞何必用牛刀，比喻治小邑，何必用禮樂之大道。

（6）偃，子游之名。

（7）諸，之於。

（8）小人，庶民。

（9）易使，容易從在上位者之教令。

【翻譯】

孔子到武城去，聽到弦歌的聲音。孔子微笑著說：「殺雞怎麼用得著牛刀呢？」子游回答說：「以前我常聽老師說過：『在上位的君子學了禮樂之道，就能愛恤人民，庶民學了禮樂之道，就容易聽從教令。』」孔子說：「同學們！偃講得很對。我剛才說的只開玩笑的啊！」

【主旨】人類存在終極性之偽，求道之真與偽。
