【原文】

孺悲（1）欲見孔子，孔子辭以疾（2），將命者（3）出戶，取瑟而歌，使之聞之（4）。

【英文】

Ru Bei wanted to see Confucius. Confucius declined to see him on the grounds of illness. As soon as the man conveying the message had stepped out of the door, Confucius took his lute and sang, making sure that Ru Bei heard it.

【注釋】

（1）孺悲，魯人，嘗學士喪禮於孔子。

（2）辭以疾，以疾害為由，辭謝不見客。

（3）將命者，傳辭者。

（4）使之聞之，使孺悲聞瑟聲知其非疾，以警教之也。

【翻譯】

孺悲要求會見孔子，孔子推辭有病，不肯接見他。傳話的人剛走出門口，孔子就拿瑟來彈，並且唱起歌來，還故意讓孺悲聽到。

【主旨】人在作為上之真偽（對天地，對人之作為），人面對他人時之真偽（人面對偽時）。
