【原文】

子曰：「予欲無言！」子貢曰：「子如不言，則小子何述（1）焉？」子曰：「天何言哉！四時行焉（2），百物生焉（3）；天何言哉？」

【英文】

The Master said, “I am thinking of giving up speech.” Zi-gong said, “If you did not speak, what would there be for us, your juniors, to transmit?” The Master said, “What does Heaven ever say? Yet there are the four seasons going round and there are the hundred things coming into being. What does Heaven ever say?”

【注釋】

（1）述，傳述。

（2）四時行焉，指春、夏、秋、冬時令之遞行。

（3）百物生焉，指萬物生生不息。

【翻譯】

孔子說：「我想不說話了。」子貢說：「如果老師不說話，那麼弟子們有什麼可以傳述呢？」孔子說：「天說些什麼呢？然而四季照樣運行，萬物照樣滋生，天說了什麼呢？」

【主旨】人在作為上之真偽（對天地，對人之作為），人面對天地時之真偽（人面對真時）。
