【原文】

子夏曰：「君子信（1）而後勞其民；未信，則以為厲（2）己也。信而後諫，未信則以為謗（3）己也。”」

【英文】

Zi-xia said, “Only after he has gained the trust of the common people does the gentleman work them hard, for otherwise they would feel themselves ill-used. Only after he has gained the trust of the lord does the gentleman admonish him against wrong action, for otherwise the lord would feel himself slandered.”

【注釋】

（1）信，人信之。

（2）厲，病也，虐待也。

（3）謗，毀謗。

【翻譯】

子夏說：「在位的君子先得到民眾的信任，然後才使他們服勞役；如果沒有得到民眾的信任，而要他們服勞役，民眾會以為是虐待他們；先得到君主的信任，然後才進諫；如果沒有得到信任就進諫，君主會以為是誹謗他。」

【主旨】論君子以誠信使民事君。
