【原文】

子夏問孝。子曰：「色難（1）。有事，弟子服其勞；有酒食（2），先生（3）饌（4），曾是以為孝乎（5）？」

【英文】

Zi-xia asked about being filial. The Master said, “What is difficult to manage is the expression on one’s face. As for the young taking on the burden when there is work to be done or letting the old enjoy the wine and the food when these are available, that hardly deserves to be called filial.”

【注釋】

（1）色難，事親之際以何顏悅色為難。

（2）食，飯也，食物。

（3）先生，謂父兄。

（4）饌，飲食之也。

（5）曾是以為孝乎，謂如此便謂孝乎；曾，乃也。

【翻譯】

子夏問孝，孔子說：「承順父母顏色乃為難也. 有事, 為人子弟者來做. 有勞役居前，酒食處後, 讓父兄先吃, 難道說這就是孝了嗎?」

【主旨】從孝論為人之真實，在為人中勞與敬之真實。
