【原文】

子曰：「吾與回（1）言終日，不違（2），如愚。退而省其私（3），亦足以發（4），回也不愚。」

【英文】

The Master said, “I can speak to Hui all day without his disagreeing with me in any way. Thus he would seem to be stupid. However, when I take a closer look at what he does in private after he has withdrawn from my presence, I discover that it does, in fact, throw light on what I said. Hui is not stupid after all.”

【注釋】

（1）回，姓顏名回，字子淵；孔子弟子。

（2）不違，不相違背，有聽受，無問難。

（3）退而省其私，退，退自師處；私，私相討論。

（4）發，發明，闡發。

【翻譯】

孔子說：「我和顏回談話，回有聽受無問難，大智若愚。不違背所說的道理. 退下來靜省其私下表現, 可見日用動靜語默之間, 皆足以發明孔夫子之道. 坦然由之而無疑. 然後知其不愚！」

【主旨】對人真實之明白，對人之私下自己時之明白。
