【原文】

季康子（1）問：「使民敬﹑忠以勸（2），如之何？」子曰：「臨之以莊（3），則敬；孝慈（4），則忠；舉善而教不能（5），則勤。」

【英文】

Ji Kang Zi asked,“How can one get the common people to be reverent, to do their utmost and to be filled with entnusiasm.’

The Master said, “Rule over them with dignity and they will be reverent; treat them with kindness and they will do their utmost; raise the good and instruct those who are backward and they will be filled with enthusiasm.”

【注釋】

（1）季康子，魯國大夫，姓季孫名肥，康其諡。

（2）以勸，以，而，連接詞；勸，勸勉。

（3）臨之以莊，言執政者容貌莊重嚴肅臨其下。臨，上對下曰臨；莊，容貌莊重嚴肅。

（4）孝慈，孝於親，慈於眾。

（5）舉善而教不能，善者舉之，而不能者教之。

【翻譯】

季康子問孔子：「想要使人民敬仰，又能盡忠，而且大家互相勸勉，怎麼樣才辦得到呢？」孔子說：「上位者臨治人民時，要態度莊嚴端重，人民自然就會敬仰，上位者能孝順父母，慈愛大眾，人民自然會盡忠，舉用善人，教導不能的人，人民自然會相互勸勉了。」

【主旨】人類與最高真實，人民存在上之真實。
