【原文】

林放（1）問禮之本（2）。子曰：「大哉問！禮，與其奢（3）也，寧儉；喪，與其易（4）也，寧戚（5）。」

【英文】

Lin Fang asked about the basis of the rites. The Master said, “A noble question indeed! With the rites, it is better to err on the side of frugality than on the side of extravagance; in mourning, it is better to err on the side of grief than on the side of indifference.”

【注釋】

（1）林放，魯人。

（2）問禮之本，言世人專事禮之繁文，而疑其本意不在此，故問。

（3）奢，奢侈，講究排場過分鋪張。

（4）易，治也，言習熟喪禮節文而無哀痛。

（5）戚，哀痛，言哀有於而虛文不足。

【翻譯】

魯國人林放向孔子請問禮的本義。孔子說：「你問得好極了！以一般的禮(祭禮)而言，與其過於奢侈，寧可儉樸些；治辦喪禮，與其注重外的虛文，寧願內心哀戚些。」

【主旨】禮之本質，禮之本或先決條件。
