【原文】

子曰：「參（1）乎！吾道一以貫之（2）。」曾子曰：「唯（3）。」子出。門人（4）問曰：「何謂也？」曾子曰：「夫子之道，忠恕（5）而已矣（6）。」

【英文】

The Master said, “Shen! There is one single thread binding my way together.”

Zeng Zi assented. After the Master had gone out, the disciples asked, “What did he mean?”

Zeng Zi said, “The way of the Master consists in doing one’s best and in using oneself as a measure to gauge the likes and dislikes of others. That is all.”

【注釋】

（1）參，曾子之名，孔子弟子。

（2）吾道一以貫之，謂孔子之道，雖千端萬緒，皆可以一道理統貫。貫，貫通。

（3）唯，應諾之詞。

（4）門人，孔子之弟子。

（5）忠恕，盡己曰忠，推己及人曰恕。

（6）而已矣，句末語助詞，猶今之「罷了」。

【翻譯】

孔子說：「參啊！我的學說貫穿著一個基本思想。」曾子說：「是。」孔子出去以後，學生們問曾子說：「老師的話是什麼意思呢？」 曾子說：「老師的學說，忠恕兩個字罷了。」

【主旨】君子與其存在，君子面對外在存在的人與事，君子在處世中面對人與物之對錯好壞賢否。
