【原文】

或曰：「雍（1）也仁而不佞（2）。」子曰：「焉用佞（3）？禦（4）人以口給（5），屢憎（6）於人。不知其仁，焉用佞？」

【英文】

Someone said, “Yong is benevolent but does not have a facile tongue.”

The Master said, “What need is there for a facile tongue? A man quick with a retort will frequently incur the hatred of others. I can not say whether Yong is benevolent or not, but what need is there for a facile tongue ?”

【注釋】

（1）雍，姓冉名雍，字仲弓，孔子弟子。

（2）佞，有口才。

（3）焉用佞，孔子嘆時人以善於口才為賢。焉，安，何。

（4）禦，抵禦，對付。

（5）口給，言詞敏捷，所謂利口。

（6）憎，憎惡。

【翻譯】

有人說：「冉雍這人有仁德卻沒有口才。」孔子說：「何必要有口才呢？靠口才對付人，常常惹人討厭。沒有仁德，光有口才有 什麼用呢？」

【主旨】社會對人的評價，佞相對於仁。
