【原文】

孟武伯問子路仁乎？子曰：「不知也。」又問。子曰：「由也，千乘之國，可使治其賦（1）也，不知其仁也。」「求也何如？」子曰：「求（2）也，千室之邑（3），百乘之家（4），可使為之宰（5）也，不知其仁也。」「赤（6）也何如？」子曰：「赤也，束帶（7）立於朝，可使與賓客言也，不知其仁也。」

【英文】

Meng Wu Bo asked whether Zi-lu was benevolent. The Master said, “I cannot say.” Meng Wu Bo repeated the question. The Master said, “You can be given the responsibility of managing the military levies in a state of a thousand chariots, but whether he is benevolent or not I cannot say.”

“What about Qiu?”

The Master said, “Qiu can be given the responsibility of a steward in a town with a thousand households or in a noble family with a hundred chariots, but whether he is benevolent or not I can not say.”

“What about Chi?”

The Master said, “When Chi takes his place at court, wearing his sash, he can be given the responsibility of conversing with the guests, but whether he is benevolent or not I cannot say.”

【注釋】

（1）賦，兵也。古時按田賦出兵，故稱兵為賦。

（2）求，姓冉名求，字子有，孔子弟子。

（3）千室之邑，大邑。即一千戶之縣邑。

（4）百乘之家，卿大夫之家。即擁有百輛兵車的卿大夫之家。家，指卿大夫的采邑。

（5）宰，邑長，家臣之通號。

（6）赤，姓公西名赤，字子華。孔子弟子。

（7）束帶，古者居官，朝服必加帶，所以整肅其衣。

【翻譯】

孟武伯問道：「子路是個仁人嗎？」孔子說：「不知道。」接著他又再問。孔子說：「仲由這個人，如果有一千輛兵車的大國，可派他去治理軍事；至於他有沒有仁德，我就不知道了。」「冉求這個人怎麼樣？」孔子說：「求嘛，一千戶的大縣，一百輛兵車的大夫家，可派他去作總管；至於他有沒有仁德，我就不知道了。」「公西赤怎樣？」孔子說：「赤嘛，穿上禮服，繫著大帶，站在朝廷上，可派他擔任外交官和外賓會談；至於他有沒有仁德，我就不知道了。」

【主旨】社會對人的評價，才幹相對於仁。
