【原文】

子謂子貢曰：「女與回也，孰愈（1）？」對曰：「賜也，何敢望（2）回？回也，聞一以知十（3）；賜也，聞一以知二（4）。」子曰：「弗如（5）也；吾與女，弗如也。」

【英文】

The Master said to Zi-gong. “Who is the better man, you or Hui?”

“How dare I compare myself with Hui? When he is told one thing. he understands ten. When I am told one thing I understand only two.”

The Master said, “You are not as good as he is. Neither of us is as good as he is.”

【注釋】

（1）孰愈，孰，誰。愈，勝，強。

（2）望，比視。

（3）聞一以知十，借數之多寡以明優劣。謂顏回聞一節，能推知全體。

（4）聞一以知二，子貢自謂聞一僅能推知其二，以明己與顏回相差懸殊。

（5）弗如，不如。

【翻譯】

孔子對子貢說：「你和顏回哪一個強些？」子貢回答說：「我怎麼敢和顏回相比呢？顏回聽說一件事就可以類推出十件事，我聽說一件事不過類推出兩件事罷了。」孔子說：「是不如他，我和你都不如他啊！」

【主旨】論人「強」之真偽，孰愈，聞一知十（知見能力之強）。
