【原文】

顏淵、季路侍（1）。子曰：「盍（2）各言爾志？」子路曰：「願車馬、衣（3）輕裘（4），與朋友共，蔽（5）之而無憾（6）。」顏淵曰：「願無伐善（7），無施勞（8）。」子路曰：「願聞子之志。」子曰：「老者安之，朋友信之，少者懷之（9）。」

【英文】

Yan Yuan and Ji-lu were in attendance. The Master said, “Why do you not each tell me what it is you have set your hearts on.”

Zi-lu said, “I should like to share my carriage and horses, clothes and furs with my friends, and to have no regrets even if they become worn.”

Yan Yuan said, “I should like never to boast of my own goodness and never to impose onerous tasks upon others.”

Zi-lu said, “I should like to hear what you have set your heart on.”

The Master said, “To bring peace to the old, to have trust in my friends, and to cherish the young.”

【注釋】

（1）侍，立侍。

（2）盍，何不。

（3）衣，服之。

（4）輕裘，裘，皮衣。裘之輕者質美，故曰輕裘。

（5）蔽，破舊。

（6）憾，怨恨。

（7）伐善，言誇有能。伐，誇耀。

（8）施勞，言誇有功。施，誇耀，張大之意。勞，功勞。

（9）老者安之三句，老者養之以安，朋友與之以信，少者懷之以恩。

【翻譯】

顏淵、子路侍立於孔子身旁。孔子說：「何不各自談談你們的志向呢？」子路說：「我願把自己的車馬穿的衣服都拿出來和朋友們共享，就 是用壞了也毫不遺憾。」 顏淵說：「我願不自誇自己的才能，部表揚自己的功勞。」 子路又說：「希望聽一聽老師您的志向。」孔子說：「老年人得到奉養安樂，朋友以信實相交，年少的能得到撫愛。」

【主旨】善良之真偽，與朋友共，無伐善勞施，老者安之，朋友信之，少者懷之。
