【原文】

哀公問：「弟子孰為好學？」孔子對曰：「有顏回者好學，不遷怒（1），不貳過（2）。不幸短命（3）死矣，今也則亡（4），未聞好學者也。」

【英文】

Duke Ai asked which of his disciples was eager to learn.

Confucius answered, “There was one Yan Hui who was eager to learn. He never transferred the anger he felt towards one person to another. Nor did he make the same mistake twice. Unfortunately his allotted span was a short one and he died. Now there is no one. No one eager to learn has come to my notice.”

【注釋】

（1）不遷怒，怒於甲者，不移於乙。遷，移。

（2）不貳過，過於前者，不復於後。貳，重複。

（3）短命，指顏回壽命短，三十二歲就去世。

（4）亡，同「無」。

【翻譯】

魯哀公問：「你的學生中哪個好學？」孔子回答說：「有個叫顏回的好學，不遷怒於人，不犯同樣的錯誤兩次。可惜短命死了！現在再也沒有這樣的人了，沒有聽說過好學的人了。」”
【主旨】論中道，論人之中道。
