【原文】

子謂仲弓，曰：「犁牛（1）之子騂且角（2），雖欲勿用（3），山川（4）其舍（5）諸？」

【英文】

The Master said of Zhong-gong,“Should a bull born of plough cattle have a sorrel coat and well-formed horns, would the spirits of the mountains and rivers allow it to be passed over even if we felt it was not good enough to be used?”

【注釋】

（1）犁牛，毛色駁雜之牛，耕田之牛。

（2）騂且角，騂，純赤色。角，角周全端正。言毛色純赤，角周全端正之牛，適合用來祭祀。

（3）用，用來祭祀。

（4）山川，指山川之神。

（5）舍，同「捨」。

【翻譯】

孔子談到冉雍時說：「耕牛生的小牛長著赤色的毛和周正的角，雖然不想用它來作祭祖，山川之神難道肯舍棄它嗎？」

【主旨】論庸道，對微薄重視之態度，身世境況之微賤。
