【原文】

曾子曰：「士（1），不可以不弘毅（2），任重而道遠。仁以為己任，不亦重乎，死而後已，不亦遠乎。」

【英文】

Zeng Zi said, “A Gentleman must be strong and resolute, for his burden is heavy and the road is long. He takes benevolence as his burden. Is that not heavy? Only with death does the road come to an end. Is that not long?”

【注釋】

（1）士，指讀書人，知識份子。

（2）弘毅，弘大剛毅。非弘大不能勝其重；非剛毅無以致其遠。

【翻譯】

曾子說：「讀書人的志氣，不可不弘大而剛毅，因為他擔當的責任重大，而且他將行走的路程遙遠。把弘揚仁道視為自己的責任，這責任不是很重大嗎？直到死才放下責任，這路程不是很遙遠嗎？」

【主旨】人從自身言之德行，心志之德。
