【原文】

子曰：「大哉堯之為君也，巍巍乎，唯（1）天為大，唯堯則之（2），蕩蕩乎（3），民無能名焉（4）。巍巍乎，其有成功（5）也，煥（6）乎，其有文章（7）。」

【英文】

The Master said, “Great indeed was Yao as a ruler! How lofty! It is Heaven that is great and it was Yao who modelled himself upon it. He was so boundless that the common people were not able to put a name to his virtues. Lofty was he in his successes and brilliant was he in his civilizedaccomplishments!”

【注釋】

（1）唯，同「惟」。獨，只有。

（2）則之，準之，言堯之德可與天相準。

（3）蕩蕩乎，蕩蕩，廣遠貌。乎，猶然也，語助詞。

（4）無能名焉，言堯之德廣遠，不可以言語形容。焉，指示代名詞，指堯之德。

（5）成功，指事業之成就。

（6）煥，光明貌。

（7）文章，指禮樂法度。

【翻譯】

孔子說：「偉大呀！像堯這樣的領袖！崇高啊！只有天最高大了，只有堯的德行可以與天平齊！真是廣遠呀，民眾無法用言語來形容他的偉大！偉大呀！光明呀，他所制定的禮樂法度！」

【主旨】君王之德，則天而成文，大而無名之德。
