【原文】

 

大宰(1)問於子貢曰:「夫子聖者與(2)!何其多能也?」子貢曰:「固天縱(3)之將聖(4),又多能也。」子聞之曰:「大宰知我乎?吾少也賤,故多能鄙事。君子多乎哉?不多也!」牢(5)曰:「子云:『吾不試(6),故藝。』

【英文】

The tai zai asked Zi-gong, “Surely the Master is a sage, is he not? Otherwise why is it he is skilled in so many things?” Zi-gong said, “It is true, Heaven set him on the path to sagehood. However, he is, in addition, skilled in many things.” The Master, on hearing of this, said, “How well the tai zai knows me! I was of humble station when young. That is why I am skilled in many menial things. Should a gentleman be skilled in many things? No, not at all.” Lao said, “The Master said, ‘I have never been proved in office. That is why I am a jack of all trades!”

 

【注釋】

(1)大宰,官名,或吳或宋未可知。

(2)與,同「歟」。疑問語助詞。大宰蓋以多能為聖。

(3)縱,放縱,言不為限量也。

(4)將聖,大聖。將,大。

(5),姓琴名牢,字子開,孔子弟子。

(6)不試,言不為世所用。試,用。

【翻譯】

太宰問子貢:「你們老師是位聖人吧?不然他為什麼這樣多才多藝呢?」子貢說:「這是上天縱使他成為大聖人,又縱使他多才多藝。」孔子聽到後說:「太宰真是了解我啊!我小的時候貧賤,所以能夠做很多粗鄙的事。君子是不是要這樣多的技藝呢?不必要多才能的。」琴牢說:「老師說過:『我不為國家所用,所以才有空去學習這些技藝。』」
