【原文】

司馬牛問「君子」。子曰：「君子不憂不懼。」曰：「不憂不懼，斯謂之君子矣乎？」子曰：「內省不疚（1），夫何憂何懼？」

【英文】

Si-ma Niu asked about the gentleman. The Master said, “The gentleman is free from  worries and fears.”

“In that case, can a man be said to be a gentleman simply because he is free from worries and fears.”

The Master said, “If, upon self-examination, a man finds nothing to reproach himself for, what worries and fears can he have?”

【注釋】

（1）內省不疚，言反省平日所為，無愧於心。疚，病也。

【翻譯】

司馬牛問怎樣做才算君子。孔子說：「君子不憂愁不害怕。」司馬牛說：「不憂愁、不害怕，就可以稱為君子了嗎？」孔子說：「自我內心反省，不感到愧疚，那有什麼可憂愁、恐懼的呢？」

【主旨】君子之道能心安理得，不憂不懼。
