【原文】

棘子成（1）曰：「君子質而已矣，何以文為？」子貢曰：「惜乎，夫子（2）之說君子也，駟不及舌（3）！文猶質也，質猶文也；虎豹之鞟，猶犬羊之鞟（4）。」

【英文】

Ji Zi-cheng said, “The important thing about the gentleman is the stuff he is made of. What does he need refinement for?” Zi-gong commented, “It is a pity that this gentleman should have spoken so about the gentleman, for a team of horses cannot catch up with one’s tongue.‘ The stuff is no different from refinement; refinement is no different from the stuff. The pelt of a tiger or a leopard, shorn of hair, is no different from that of a dog or a sheep.”

【注釋】

（1）棘子成，衛大夫。

（2）夫子，指棘子成。古之大夫都可以被尊稱為夫子。

（3）駟不及舌，言過失之言一出於舌，則駟馬不能追之。

（4）虎豹之鞟猶犬羊之鞟，言虎豹之皮之所以易於犬羊之皮，在於毛之文采異耳。鞟，皮去毛者。

【翻譯】

棘子成說：「君子只要有好的本質就夠了，又何必要禮樂的文采來修飾呢？」子貢說：「可惜啊！棘夫子這樣來解釋君子。話說出來，就連用四匹馬駕的快車也難以追趕回來！文飾和本質是互相關聯，同等重要。如果把虎豹皮上有文采的毛去除掉，虎豹的革不是和犬羊的革就一樣了嗎？」

【主旨】君子之於質文二者，不宜偏廢。
