【原文】

子貢問曰：「鄉人皆好（1）之，何如？」子曰：「未可也。」「鄉人皆惡（2）之，何如？」子曰：「未可也。不如鄉人之善者好之，其不善者惡之。」

【英文】

Zi-gong asked, “All in the village like him. What do you think of that?”

The Master said, “That is not enough.”

“All in the village dislike him. What do you think of that?”

The Master said, “That is not enough either. It would be better if those in his village who are good like him and those who are bad dislike him.”

【注釋】

（1）好，喜歡。

（2）惡，討厭。

【翻譯】

子貢問道：「一鄉的人都喜歡他，這個人怎麼樣？」孔子說：「還不可以說他是好人。」子貢又問：「一鄉的人都厭惡他，這個人怎麼樣？」孔子說：「還不可以說他是壞人。倒不如一鄉的人中的好人喜歡他，同時壞人厭惡他，這才是真正的好人。」

【主旨】觀察善惡者之道。
