【原文】

子曰：「吾之於人也，誰毀誰譽（1）？如有所譽者，其有所試（2）矣。斯民（3）也，三代（4）之所以直道（5）而行也。」

【英文】

The Master said, “Whom among men have I ever praised or condemned? If there is anyone I praised, you may be sure that he had been put to the test. These common people are the touchstone by which the Three Dynasties were kept to the straight path.”

【注釋】

（1）誰毀誰譽，毀者，稱人之惡而損其真。譽者，揚人之善而過其實。

（2）其有所試，試，試之以證驗。所譽者，輒試以事，不虛譽而已。

（3）斯民，今此之人。

（4）三代，夏、商、周。

（5）直道，無私曲。

【翻譯】

孔子說：「我對於別人，毀謗過那一個？讚譽過那一個？如果有被我讚譽的人，那必定經過我考驗證實過的。現在這些人民，都是經過夏、商、周三代正直之道教養下來的人，我怎能隨意批評啊！」

【主旨】論正直之道。
