【原文】

孔子曰：「『見善如不及（1），見不善而探湯（2）。』吾見其人矣，吾聞其語矣！『隱居以求其志（3），行義以達其道（4）。』吾聞其語矣，未見其人也！」

【英文】

Confucius said, “Seeing what is good I act as if I risked failing to catch up with it; seeing what is not good I act as if I were testing hot water. I have met such a man; I have heard such a claim. I live in retirement in order to attain my purpose and practise what is right in order to realize my way. I have heard such a claim, but I have yet met such a man.”

【注釋】

（1）見善如不及，見善事，如恐不及人之善。

（2）見不善而探湯，見惡事，如試探熱湯，其去之必速；以喻見惡事而去之速。

（3）隱居以求其志，為隱遯幽居以求遂其己志也。

（4）行義以達其道，謂好行義事以達其仁道也。

【翻譯】

孔子說：「『見到別人的善處，像追趕什麼，惟恐趕不上似的，見到別人的不善處，像摸熱開水，惟恐避開不夠快似的。』我見過這樣的人，也聽過這樣的話！『避世隱居來成全我的心志，出仕行義來達成我的理想。』我聽過這樣的話，但沒有見過這種人。」

【主旨】言善人難得。
