【原文】

叔孫武叔（1）語大夫於朝曰：「子貢賢於仲尼。」子服景伯（2）以告子貢。子貢曰：「譬之宮牆（3）：賜之牆也及肩，窺見室家之好。夫子之牆數仞（4），不得其門而入，不見宗廟（5）之美，百官之富。得其門者或寡矣。夫子（6）之云，不亦宜乎！」

【英文】

Shu-sun Wu-shu said to the Counsellors at court, “Zi-gong is superior to Zhong-ni.” This was reported to Zi-gong by Zi-fu Jing-bo.

Zi-gong said, “Let us take outer walls as an analogy. My walls are shoulder high so that it is possible to peer over them and see the beauty of the house. But the Master’ s walls are twenty or thirty feet high so that, unless one gains admittance through the gate, one cannot see the magnificence of the ancestral temples or the sumptuousness of the official buildings. Since those who gain admittance through the gate are, shall we say, few, is it any wonder that the gentleman should have spoken as he did?”

【注釋】

（1）叔孫武叔，魯大夫，叔孫氏，名州仇，諡為武。

（2）子服景伯，魯大夫，子服氏，名何，字伯，諡為景。

（3）宮牆，猶言圍牆。

（4）仞，八尺曰仞。

（5）宗廟，祭祀祖先之所。

（6）夫子，指武叔。

【翻譯】

叔孫武叔在朝廷上向大夫們說：「子貢的學問道得勝過他的老師仲尼。」子服景伯把這些話告訴子貢。子貢說：「譬如屋子的圍牆：我端木賜的圍牆，高度只到肩膀，從牆外便可以看到屋子裡的美好。老師的圍牆，卻好幾丈高，如果找不到大門走進去，就看不到裡面宗廟裝飾的輝煌，文武百官的富盛。能夠找到大門進去的人或許很少吧。武叔不了解我的老師，說我勝過老師，不是很自然嗎？」

【主旨】子貢美孔子之德。
